TINY BOOT by DW Binnion
TNY_BOOT.PRG is a little program I wrote to make booting a little
less boring. Even with a hard drive it takes about 50 seconds for
my desk accessories to load, leaving me with a totally blank
screen. I've had several boot-up picture loaders but they all had
flaws - too slow or required the name of the picture or used a
format other than tiny - which for several reasons, I prefer.
Thus was born TINY BOOT. It displays a randomly selected picture
at boot up time. The pictures can be in a designated folder or
the AUTO folder.
TNY_BOOT.PRG is put in the AUTO folder and MUST be the last PRG
file for the picture to remain on screen while the accessories are
loading. I use both FOLDERSXXX and UNIVERSE and they don't mind
not being last. UNIVERSE is next to last and has worked
flawlessly.
TNY_BOOT.PRG can display pictures in all three resolutions but
will not display color pics on a monochrome monitor or hi-rez pics
on a color one. The program is long enough already without
providing a dithering algorithm. It is smart enough to figure out
what kind of monitor you're using and adjust accordingly.
After placing TNY_BOOT.PRG in the AUTO folder, either:
1) move some TNY pics into that folder, or
2) create a TNY_BOOT.INF file specifying which folder
the pics are found in. You may also turn off my
vanity title by putting an 'N' on the second line.
For example:
E:\clip_art\boot.pic
N
this will tell TNY_BOOT to look for the pictures on
drive E in the CLIP_ART\BOOT.PIC\ folder. It also
turns off the title
E:\clip_art\boot.pic
Y
Does the same thing but keeps the titling on.
You'll get to see my name and the name of the TINY
picture on screen.
That's all there is to it. The pics don't have to be segregated
according to resolution and you don't have to move them from the
folder you normally keep them in. TINY BOOT looks to see which
folder the pics are in and if it doesn't find the TNY_BOOT.INF
file it looks for the pictures in the AUTO folder.
